The Commodore’s Press Report: Penmaenmawr Sailing Club hosted their annual ‘Puffin Island Off Shore Open Race’ on Sunday the 15th of June. Twelve craft of various sizes started the race together in good but light winds to make their way around Puffin Island and back to Penmaenmawr. Due to the winds getting even lighter the craft spread out and the 12 to 15 mile race became a marathon of endurance and patience. Four boats made it around Puffin Island, but after almost five hours only three completed the race.
1st Peter Lewis and Carol Pye – Dart 18
2nd Glenn Williams and Ieuan Williams – Hobie Tiger
3rd Graham Rushton and Steve Widowson – Hobie Tiger.
Race Officers Bernard Carter and Hilary Moss
Safety Boats Gerry Frobisher and Mike Moss
Catering Mandy Williams.
Pete & Carol winners of this year’s trophy, Puffin Island Off Shore Open Race said “Wind was ok at start, then nothing after 10 mins, we drifted to far towards Aber, then a little bit of wind as we got further out over Lavin Sands. Then thankfully a bit of wind as we went through Puffin Sound and a bit around the back, then not a lot all the way back. 4 hours 29 mins ish to get round. It was a pleasant day out though. On behalf of all crews, a big thank you to the two Safety Boat Crews for who kept watch for 5 hours straight !”.
