Return to Boating Wales

Message from RYA Cymru Wales CEO, Gerwyn Owen

Further to my initial message on Friday evening about the return to recreational boating that has been granted through the easing of restrictions of lockdown by Welsh Government, Iā€™m pleased to update you further on general guidelines in respect to recreational boating activity in Wales during the current period.  General Guidance for Boating Activity for Red Phase

As our guiding principles have always been, we are taking current Welsh Government guidelines into consideration, whilst being considerate and responsible in our approach. I was delighted that Watersports has been recognised as a form of outdoor activity that can take place at this time, but we still need to consider the wider restrictions such as travel, social distancing and hygiene measures when considering to boat.

Currently, clubs and centres are deemed outdoor sporting facilities, and as highlighted in the statements on Friday, these will be reviewed ahead of the next phase, to be announced on June 18th, 2020. I know this has come as disappointment to a number of you, however it does give everyone the opportunity to implement appropriate control measures, following risk assessments, ahead of re-opening. This evidence will be provided to Welsh Government so that they can be assured that we are being considerate and responsible, and not impacting on the health of the nation negatively.

Our Club Guidance documents provides you with appropriate examples. Additionally join in on our Club Development forums this week, where we will be discussing safety on the water, boat maintenance and risk assessments.

We will continue to follow Welsh Government guidance and take a considerate and responsible approach to the return of boating in Wales. It is essential that boaters follow guidance on social distancing and hygiene carefully, and comply with guidance on interaction with other households.  Equally important is the imperative to boat safely, well within the levels of your ability, and avoid placing unnecessary strain on the RNLI and emergency services.

We are seeking further clarification from Welsh Government and key stakeholders on certain areas of restrictions, specifically around outdoor venues, tourist spots and access to facilities. The general guidelines from RYA Cymru Wales will be updated and shared with members, clubs and centres as appropriate.

Keep safe, keep well, keep smiling
