Last night Bernard had a special (and safe) visit to honor his lifetimes work at Pen Sailing, with a ‘Presentation Letter’ from the Club Commodore and an ‘Engraved Plaque’ presented to Bernard on behalf of all the club members by Peter Lewis.
Honorary Life President
Bernard Carter joined PSC in 1964 so 2020 sees him having been a member for 56 years. Beginning as Safety Boat pilot, Bernard became a very competent dinghy racer during his early days at the club, very experienced at sailing Enterprises and Ospreys in particular. Bernard is always willing to pass on his skills to all members of the Club – young or old.
Bernard has held every officers position and has been the annual President for the last few years. He has been the Clubs long standing race officer for many years, and is always the first in on our Club race days, every Sunday, to set up the club and always ensures we have great race days, open events, and firework displays!
To quote Bernard:-
“Things have changed a lot from the wooden clubhouse built by members under the eyes of Sam Purcock, the clubs founder. Many members put a lot of work in to it since then. We had committee meetings in the early days in front of a nice gas fire in the stone fireplace”.
“I first started sailing in a Firefly and did a couple of years as safety boat pilot in a Dell Quay Dory. It was a great sea boat but very wet. I then bought an Enterprise and if you can sail an Enterprise with a full rig you can sail anything. I then bought an Osprey, which I still think is the best fast trapeze dinghy to sail. Peter Lewis started crewing for me as a young lad, he was great crew. We still have one founder member, Dilys Roberts who is still a great supporter to the Club. She has a hairdressers in the village”.
